What is the significance of September 1?

This marks the first day of September of the class of 2027's Junior year of High School, and by recruiting calendars, marks the opening of the DI communications period. There will be upcoming "dead" and "silent" periods for all the NCAA sanctioned programs, but as of midnight 8/31, the programs at the highest level that essentially set the table for the rest of the schools and how the cards fall, really kick off.

What should I expect?

So realistically the top 1-5% of the class of 2027 will receive contact early this week, in forms of texts, calls and emails from the coaching staff for the interested schools. The biggest message to the general group is don't let the pending social media avalanche of things coming up put unjust pressure on you. Even for those who do get early contact and throughout the fall, this is not a sprint and it really shouldn't be, as exciting as things are in today's information age.

What, if anything, should we know or do?

Once again in general terms, there are a few things I recommend for guys entering this time period, no matter the expectation on competition level.

  • Make sure you are up-to-date on sports apps' profiles (IMLCA/Sports Recruits & NCSA are two of the most popular)
  • Take a moment to make sure all sections have relevant and current info.
  • The athlete has to be the driving factor, no matter the school
  • Parents can be present, but coaches want to feel the connection between the student-athletes and whoever is representing their program.
  • Think of what matters to you, because the questions coaches generally ask are intended to open you up to conversation (that connection they want), so think through as best you can what would matter at a school and your decision.
  • Get comfortable on the phone and in conversation! You can't avoid it, so prepare and embrace to set yourself apart.
  • Be open-minded when schools reach out
  • Respond timely, respond appropriately.
  • The coaching community is tightknit, so even if you talk to a coach at a school that may not fit your needs and the like you, they may have a buddy at a school that would fit and they can advocate for you.
  • Along the same lines, the assistant coaches or the DII and DIII coaches tend to backfill bigger/better positions as coaching vacancies open up, so as time goes on you never know what opportunity may present itself.
  • Keep your current coaches (high school and club team) informed of interactions with college coaches. They not only want to celebrate these milestones with you but also have conversations with college coaches pretty consistently. They can be a HUGE resource!
